Yes! Olympic fencing is one of the safest sports. Studies show fencing is actually safer than badminton. Fencers wear protective equipment including metal face masks, padded jackets, and gloves. The weapons have blunt tips (not sharp edges) and are designed as sporting equipment, not actual weapons. Our coaches follow USA Fencing safety protocols and all equipment is regularly inspected.
Your first trial class is completely FREE—no equipment or payment required! If you decide to continue, monthly membership starts at $165 for intro and beginner sessions and includes 4 classes. We provide all equipment for beginners to borrow, so there’s no upfront cost for gear. Most students train for 3-6 months before purchasing their own equipment (typically $400-700 for a complete setup).
We welcome fencers from age 6 to 70+! Fencing is a lifelong sport. Our youngest students are 6 years old, and we have active adult fencers in their 60s and 70s. Whether you’re looking for a youth sport, high school extracurricular, college pathway, or adult fitness activity, it’s never too early or too late to start.
Not at all! Fencing builds fitness over time. You don’t need any prior athletic experience or special fitness level to begin. Our classes accommodate all fitness levels, and you’ll naturally develop stamina, strength, and coordination as you train. Many successful fencers started with no athletic background.
Wear comfortable gym clothes with LONG PANTS (no shorts) and clean athletic shoes. Bring a water bottle. That’s it! We provide all fencing equipment including masks, jackets, gloves, and weapons for your trial class.
Training frequency depends on your goals. Recreational fencers typically attend 1-2 times per week. Students interested in competition usually train 2-3 times per week. We offer flexible scheduling with no mandatory attendance—you train as often as your schedule allows.
Adults absolutely can and do learn fencing! We have dedicated adult classes and active adult fencers from ages 18 to 70+. Many adults start fencing for fitness, mental challenge, or as a shared activity with their children. It’s never too late to start this Olympic sport.
No! Competition is entirely optional. Many of our students fence purely for fitness, fun, and personal development. Others love the competitive aspect and travel to regional and national tournaments. You choose your own path—recreational or competitive fencing are both welcome at T3.
These are the three Olympic fencing weapons, each with different rules and styles:
- Foil: Light, precise weapon targeting the torso only. Emphasizes technique and right-of-way tactics.
- Épée: Heavier weapon where the entire body is valid target. No right-of-way rules—most realistic dueling simulation.
- Saber: Fast, aggressive weapon targeting everything above the waist. You can score with edge or tip.
Beginners try all three weapons before specializing in one (or training in multiple!).
“Good” means different things to different people! You’ll actually fence in your very first class. Most students feel comfortable with fundamentals within 3-6 months. Developing competitive skills typically takes 1-2 years of consistent training. Like any sport, mastery is a lifelong journey—but you’ll have fun and see progress from day one.
